Equilibrio means balance

At five locations in Europe, the artist Rolf Schaffner erected his steles of natural stone-blocks (rocks): With the one near Cologne being in the centre, they are located in Trondheim/Norway in the North, in Santanyi/Spain in the South, Cork/Ireland in the West and Volgograde/Russia in the East. By linking these locations with imaginary lines, the sign of the cross is being formed which leads to another powerful system and its balance. The sculptor named them “Meridians of Peace” and with this international commitment and project he wants us to reflect on the future of the planet we inhabit.

Schaffner’s steles stand upright and silent. They mark places with a special history – a history printed indelibly on our collective memory. To make these stones talk, to keep memories alive, to communicate with one another – all this could create a new network of powerlines all across the planet. And it could make Schaffner’s vision of a balance/ an equilibrium between the planet earth and its inhabitants unite.
