Attributing an artist’s lifework to the places he lived at, seems daring.
An artist’s work - doesn’t it spring from freedom of creativity? The sculptor Rolf Schaffner’s
answer to this question is not theoretical, instead he presents his own practical work, closely
interwoven with the experience of a place that provides him with support and inspiration.
The space where one lives and works is – according to Schaffner – not haphazard. His art bears witness to the dialogue not only between the artist and his inner self but also between the artist and the urban as well as nature sites surrounding him. He sets constancy and devotion to a place against the consumption-oriented and fast-moving society of our time.
His stone sculptures again evoke the forces of gravity as well as the erectness of structure found at a certain locality.
Although we are increasingly familiar with the world of “artifice” and nature is no longer our “role model”, we remain tied to our own body, our most original and intimate home.
Born and raised in Germany, Schaffner choose the Island of Mallorca to become his place
of residence and work. With the major international sculpture project “Equilibrio” he finally
wants to make visible his obligation and closeness to his surroundings and to extend it to a
widening dimension.
Rolf Schaffner died on Easter Sunday, the 23rd March, 2008, on Majorca.
