Rolf Schaffner was born in 1927. After five years of highschool, her became an airforce assistant in the (then) “labour programme”, followed by some time in the Naval Forces and as Prisone of War.

In 1956 he joined the sculpture class of Professor A. Hiller at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts. He finished his studies in 1962, coming Top of his Class ( Master Student).

Exept for a few interruptions, Rolf Schaffner has lived and worked in Mallorca since 1962 – away from the art world, tourism and the hectic insider scene. Why does a a young artist, just starting his career, make such a decision and abide by it ?

At five locations in Europe, the artist Rolf Schaffner erected his steles of natural stone-blocks (rocks): With the one near Cologne being in the centre, they are located in Trondheim/Norway in the North, in Santanyi/Spain in the South, Cork/Ireland in the West and Volgograde/Russia in the East.

The studio of Rolf Schaffner, the sculptor, is a “free”” and “open” place in every respect, with only the sky above him being the roof, the earth the ground. It is here, adjacent to his house on the island of Mallorca, that his stone sculptures are being created. Here they stand.
