The studio of Rolf Schaffner, the sculptor, is a “free”” and “open” place in every respect, with only the sky above him being the roof, the earth the ground. It is here, adjacent to his house on the island of Mallorca, that his stone sculptures are being created. Here they stand. Sculptures of all forms and sizes offering themselves to the tentative looks of the interested viewer. Slender, upright or rather lying, sometimes polished, or just left in their natural state. However, it is only with a hand touching them that the stones reveal more of their secret.
Schaffner’s artistic language is unequivocal, without mannerisms: he uses square, rectangular and circular shapes.
The stones are often placed as groups, thus conveying a feeling of rhythm, measure, proportion and harmony. Closeness to nature does not exclude artistic perfection.
Every single sculpture is a witness of the sculptor Rolf Schaffner’s
dialogue with his material that is continued with the surroundings and
the viewer.
Schaffner’s “words” of stone make us forget the mortality of all beings
and offer to those who understand and respond to a fleeting glimpse at
eternity.
